Built to receive Roll-on Roll-off vessels that specialize in rolling cargo.
Terminal Zarate belongs to the Argentinian Murchison Group and together with Neltume Ports they inaugurated the AutoMOBILE International Terminal (AIT) vehicle terminal at the Port of Mobile, Alabama, USA. This terminal was specially designed and built to receive Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) vessels that specialize in rolling cargo, and is expected to move 150,000 vehicles per year.
The project began in 2018, after the Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) invited tenders to build and operate it in 2016. The investment totaled US$ 62 million, where 30% was provided by the private operator (Neltume Ports and Terminal Zárate) and 70% by ASPA.
AIT will operate on a 23-hectare site from a 12-meter deep berth. The new terminal is connected to five Class I railroads, with connections throughout North America and immediate, unobstructed access to major US interstates and highways.
The inauguration was held remotely with officials from the State of Alabama, the City of Mobile and senior port officials.
Ultramar’s Chairman, Richard von Appen, said, “We are very pleased to participate in the AutoMobile International Terminal. AIT represents a very important event for Neltume Ports, as it launches our participation in the US port industry. We are also very pleased that this terminal is in Mobile, which is a strategic location with efficient connections to the whole of North America.”
The terminal will operate a 10-year concession, with the potential to extend the concession for up to 30 years. The port will primarily serve the import and export requirements of the automotive market in the United States.
